Captain Tresario: Birth of Freedom is a Year 18 Tresarian superhero movie produced by Cartel Studios and distributed by Zero Productions. It was directed by Fooj Iwajo, written by Mable Knudsen, the female pseudonym of writer Wedge Cornely, and Jerome Newsome, and stars Wedge Cornely, Teresa Wisemail, Bosd'izomo'vaonarto, Xiza Dridrij, Flaf-Flaf Graru, Shrewrombalmign and Sommirick Finns. Wedge Cornely would often appear on set in drag, during the writing phase to protect his pseudonym. The film chronicles the origin story of Captain Tresario, and is set during the tumultuous time period following the Derra conflicts in Year 14.

Captain Tresario: The Birth of Freedom premiered in Anzat on Year 18 Day 260, and was released in Tresario Star Kingdom on Year 18 Day 275. The film has grossed 62.6 billion credits on its opening day, making it the second highest grossing Tresarian film in Year 18. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences, particularly for its visuals, soundtrack and cast. An untitled Captain Tresario sequel is being developed, with Iwajo returning to direct.

Plot

In Year 14, a small team of Tresarian agents on an unidentified jungle planet disguise themselves as scientists and infiltrate a secret Krath research complex. There they discover a massive effort to mass produce soldiers using genetic and chemical enhancement, all centered around replicating the facility's sole successful humanoid test subject. While the team is being shown the sedated subject, he wakes up and attacks the scientists examining him. The team makes a snap decision to help him escape and they incapacitate the guards and other scientists in the room. Together with the test subject, they fight their way out of the base and disappear into the surrounding jungle.

The test subject introduces himself as Steve Green and tells them the story of his freighter being boarded by Krath soldiers while he attempted to escape the fighting at Derra. They bring him with them to a Tresarian military base and run a search to check if he has relatives living on other planets, but unfortunately the search returns no results. When they tell him the bad news, he begins asking them if they will be sending another mission to destroy the Krath facility. They attempt to deflect his questions and claim they can’t involve him since he isn’t in Tresario’s military. Shortly after leaving the base, Steve walks into a Tresarian military recruitment office and enlists.

Steve’s enhanced abilities and his vendetta against Krath propel him to many awards and promotions. His exploits also garner him attention from Tresarian news organizations who dub him “Captain Tresario.” However, Steve is dismissive of his new fans and thinks of them as idiots being fooled by sensationalist reporters. His reputation continues to grow, and when his superiors offer him the opportunity to volunteer for a special mission to destroy another Krath research facility, Steve leaps at the chance. While they are traveling to the base, some of the other soldiers strike up a conversation with Steve about why they volunteered for the mission. Steve is openly skeptical of the ones who volunteered because of their love for Tresario, and when asked about his own motivation, he gives only a few vague answers that allude to his hatred of Krath.

When they reach the base and commence the attack, they quickly come up against many mutated creatures and sentients. These experiments fight ferociously but only attack in a mindless rage, and the commando team makes steady progress into the base. Steve catches sight of a Krath scientist he recognizes from the old facility, and he charges down the hall after him. By the time they catch up with the scientist, he is preparing for takeoff in a small freighter. Steve and his team manage to board the cargo ramp of the freighter as it closes but they are quickly met with guards. During the chaotic fight through the cargo hold, some of the experiments are released, and many cages and cryogenic modules containing experiments and tissue samples are destroyed.

They finally take control of the cockpit and adjust the ship’s destination to an outpost in Tresarian terrritory, but when they try to make the jump to hyperspace, the ship almost immediately drops back to realspace. An inspection reveals the hyperdrive and communications equipment to have been irreparably damaged by the fight and attempted hyperjump. The sublight drives are unaffected, but traveling by sublight to the closest Tresarian outpost would take years, and the ship’s supplies will run out long before the end of the journey. Just as they are about to give in to despair, they hit upon the idea of repurposing the cryogenic containers of experiments and putting themselves into a state of suspended animation. Unfortunately only one container remains undamaged, and it only has space for a single passenger. The team unanimously decide that Steve should be the one to be frozen, reminding him about how he has become an inspiration for billions of Tresarian citizens. Steve is stunned by their belief in him in spite of his earlier criticsm of their motives, and in response, he vows to honor their sacrifice by putting aside his vendetta against Krath and striving to become a hero embodying the Tresarian ideals his comrades are giving their lives for.

Three years later a small freighter drifts through space towards a Tresarian military outpost. A squad of patrol ships fly out to intercept it, and upon boarding they discover the container holding Steve’s frozen body.

Production

Development

Director Fooj Iwajo sought to produce Captain Tresario movie based on tales of Captain Tresario popular among Navy members. In Year 18 Day 107, he entered negotiation with Cartel Studios to direct the then-untitled film with Tresario Core Fleet officer, Lieutenant Wedge Cornely in the lead role. In Year 18 Day 136, an amateur comic book was released and the film gained momentum after the success of the Captain Tresario amateur comic book. In Year 18 Day 143, Zero Productions under, Admiral Xyler Zero of Tresarian Navy, purchased the film rights and help to finance the film.

Birth of Freedom was conceived specifically as the origin story of Captain Tresario. The initial pitch tossed around between the writers was, "What do you think of Cap as the product of a Krath experiment, rescued and introduced to FREEDOM by TSK?" With this as the premise, the framework of the plot began to take shape around the conflicts at Derra in Year 14, the most recent time Tresario and Krath engaged in extended open conflict.

Avedis Radinka, a well known Tresarian comic collector and a fan of Captain Tresario, agreed to write the script for the film. Radinka explained that becoming a hero of Tresario was his dream as a child. In Year 18 Day 145, Cartel Studio signed Mable Knudsen and Jerome Newsome to help and rewrote Radinka's script in order to bring down the budget to 20 billion credits, as Radinka's first draft would have cost 50 billion credits to produce. Tresarian Dawn writer, Mark Waymen, also contributed to the final version of the screenplay. In an interview during the early stages of development, Waymen described this film as one that could redefine the superhero genre in Tresario.

Pre-production

Film Insider was the first to report that an officer of Tresarian Navy, Wedge Cornely was cast as Captain Tresario. This rumor was confirmed by Cartel on Year 18 Day 150 in a press release which revealed that Wedge's contract included the possibility of multiple sequel films. Film Insider also stated numerous actresses, including Tatyana Sarasveti, Patty Aridala, and Teresa Wisemail were being tested for the film's female lead, and that Wisemail was in final talks to star in the film. Matteo Tarenzzoli was cast for the role of film's main villain, but turned it down to focus on upcoming Sullivan Spielvarg's thriller movie, Double Life. Later, Chiss actor Bosd'izomo'vaonarto or known as Dizomo by his core name was cast as Dr. Grimm, after mentioned in Wisemail's social media account. The next month, TheGrab reported that Xiza Dridrij was being eyed for a role, while Shrewrombalmig was in negotiations to join the film. Also in the same month, the film's name had been changed from Captain Tresario: The Summer Soldier to Captain Tresario: Birth of Freedom.

Filming

Principal photography on the film began at Seltree Studios, in Planet Toydaria, Hutt Space, on Year 18 Day 165. It was announced that the film would shoot in New Holtice and was expected to include scenes featuring New Holtice landmarks and jungle environments. Space scenes were scheduled to be shot in Anzat System because of its magnificent asteroid view. The film was targeted to complete in 100 days using Holo-film technology while the film was shot using Ultra Holo T-vision lenses.
