Forscan I

Astrographic entry: Forscan I
Forscan I is one of the largest planets of the Forscan system, second only to the gas giant Forscan III. It is frigid, with almost half of the surface covered with a thick layer of ice, and the rest is rocky terrain. The planet's atmosphere is composed mainly of hydrogen and helium, with small amounts of other gases. The presence of ammonia in a relatively high percentage makes the atmosphere toxic. With all these harsh conditions, it is no surprise that the planet's sentients are required to use breathing masks to curtail the toxicity. Forscan I's peculiar atmosphere blocks much of the light from the system's star, maintaining the icy climate despite its proximity to the sun.

Forscan I's gravity levels are much lower than what might be expected for a planet of its size. Researchers hypothesize that the planet has a hollow core, lowering its mass and therefore its gravity. Geological scans support the theory, but because the thickness of the crust is believed to be at least half of the planet's radius, the inner core has not been accessed for study. Prospectors have identified signs of several valuable minerals, but Tresarian authorities are still weighing the costs of mining operations in such a toxic atmosphere.

Forscan III

Astrographic entry: Forscan III
Being just over half the size of the star it orbits, Forscan III is by far the largest planet in its system. Its massive size generates a gravitational field that affects the movement of the Forscan star. It's size, paired with its location as the furthest planet from the star, causes it to divert, deflect, or capture comets and asteroids in the system. Researchers suggest this has played an important role in allowing life to start and continue on the system's inner planets.

The gas giant is also the most populated planet in its system. While the deeper levels of its atmosphere are impassable to all but the sturdiest mining probes, its upper atmosphere is home to the billions of sentients who live on the millions of mining rigs, refineries, factories, and luxury residential stations suspended in the clouds. While the planet has always been popular with tibannagas mining corporations, a massive urbanization project by the Tresario Star Kingdom in Year 12 made it a hub for manufacturing and trade, and a popular destination for the Tresarian elite.

Forscan VI

Astrographic entry: Forscan VI
Forscan VI is the third planet from the system's sun, and one of the system's most naturally beautiful planets. Instead of a surface ocean, Forscan VI is bisected by a large saltwater lake. The land to the west of the lake consists of coastal wetlands that give way to a fertile prairie valley. High mountain ranges to the north and south keep the moisture from escaping to the polar regions and keep winter storms from encroaching into the valley. The eastern half of the planet is starkly different. It is marked by volcanos and churning magma fields that have given rise to craggy mountains and winding cave systems. Toxic gasses prevent widespread development, except for mining settlements which seek to take advantage of the rare ores brought to the surface by volcanic activity.

Field Marshal Shawn Veldn specifically selected Forscan VI to serve as the base of operations for the "River Rats", Tresario's amphibious operations unit. The planet is ideal due to the various climates it provides for the Rats to be trained in year-round. Rivers, swamps, mountains, deserts, glaciers, grasslands, and caves; all provide the Rats with a variety of terrain to practice the guerrilla tactics they would be applying toward their enemies. Field Marshall Velden organizes scenarios for the Rats to endure psychological tests, fitness and swim tests, obstacle courses, land navigation drills, and long ruck marches under harsh conditions.

Forscan II

Astrographic entry: Forscan II
Forscan II is a young planet in geological terms. An essential area of the surface is still covered with hot lava, reflecting significant volcanic activity. The planet has been passing through an ice age for centuries and, though temperatures are rising in its atmosphere, the glaciers are still retreating, leaving the planet's poles capped in thick ice. The rest of the planet consists of a single mountainous continent and what could be called a substantial inner sea. Life can be harsh on the plains as, all through the year, strong winds blow through them from the rivers. When the winds meet the cool air currents coming from the mountains, massive storms are formed, which can last for weeks. Conditions are worse during the hot summer season, however, as tornadoes and flash floods are not uncommon during that time of the year. The climate in the mountains is more regular and tends to be cold and dry, depending on the distance to the rivers or the volcanic area.

Early settlements in the mountains were related to mining. Mineral resources, although not plentiful, are still being discovered. While there may be unknown resources in the unexplored regions of the planet, there have been complaints against mining activity by environmental groups. They support the notion that the mining activity is affecting the ecology by forcing the ice's retreat and contributing to the global warming trend. Many, including the mining companies, argue that mining cannot be the sole cause of these changes -- pointing to volcanic activity as the primary source of gases generating a greenhouse effect.

Forscan IV

Astrographic entry: Forscan IV
Forscan IV is the closest planet to the Forscan sun in the Forscan system. It is also the smallest planet of the system, besides the moons. It is so close to the sun that daylight temperatures are scorching, and its temperature is so high that some areas, which were first considered volcanic, are just molten rock. The abnormally high temperatures allow chemical reactions to take place that would not proceed under normal planetary conditions. Though many have anticipated large raw material deposits on Forscan IV, there are a few issues with operating on its surface. The most pertinent concern is thermal protection, but prospectors must also plan for the planet's corrosive atmosphere. The percentage of sulfur oxides is as high as 0.001%, and, while not high enough to be detected spectroscopically from other planets, they are incredibly reactive in such elevated temperatures -- especially with metals. This particular atmosphere has caused the loss of the first probes sent to the planet. It is currently unknown how it is possible that a constant amount of such highly reactive molecules could exist in the atmosphere. Additionally, even getting to the planet is a dangerous endeavor. Due to its proximity to the Kar-Bannog, there is a risk of being trapped in the sun's gravitational field. The planet moves around the sun at a swift pace, making a complete orbit around it (a planetary year) in a few galactic days. However, since the development of sublight drives, the difficulties of reaching the planet had been significantly reduced.

Forscan V

Astrographic entry: Forscan V
Forscan V is the second smallest planet in the Forscan system. While it is not the most remote planet, its long, elliptical orbit keeps it distant from the system's star most of its year. This keeps the planet frozen and mostly inhospitable for most multicellular lifeforms. The surface of Forscan V is dominated by glaciers and snowpack which can be hundreds of meters thick in some places. The planet's rocky surface is visible only where volcanic and geothermal activity keep temperatures above freezing. In these regions, a variety of microbial life thrives, having adapted to feed on the abundant toxic gasses. Researches have also discovered underground lakes and rivers beneath the frozen surface, kept liquid by a combination of pressure and proximity to the magma below.

Because of its inhospitable climate, Forscan V has never been heavily populated. Prospectors have failed to find valuable resources, and it was never seriously considered for colonization. At different times in the systems history ports were established for trade, both reputable and otherwise, but few of these ports developed into continually inhabited settlements. Most of the planet's permanent residents are employed to mine the thick glaciers and purify the water for export to planets like Forscan IV, where water is scarce.

There have been rumors of Force-sensitive individuals visiting the planet's cave systems to meditate deep below the surface. Many of these caves are only accessible at certain times of the year when the planet is closest to the system's sun, and the glaciers recede. Forscan V's history with Force-sensitive communities remains a mystery, and many of the cave systems have yet to have been surveyed professionally.

Moons

Forscan VI A

Astrographic entry: Forscan VI A
Forscan VI A is a small, sparsely inhabited moon orbiting Forscan VI. The moon is a base of operations for the "River Rats", the elite Tresarian amphibious assault force. Because of a lack of mining and industrial potential, the moon was not originally colonized with the rest of the system. Urbanization did not begin until the other more attractive planets started to become crowded. But its thin atmosphere does support a unique ecosystem. Lichens and mosses grow in craters and canyons where moisture is protected from evaporation. Small herbivores inhabit these sanctuary ravines and are preyed upon by larger predators that either prowl the surface or live deeper in the crevasses. The River Rats are known to use the barren crags for survival and combat training, as the predators inhabiting them can be as hostile as the terrain itself.
